Why Milla Jovovich's Alice Has Never Appeared In A Resident Evil Game

Milla Jovovich's Alice has become something of an icon but she's never appeared in a Resident Evil game. Here's why Alice is excluded.

Milla Jovovich's zombie slayer Alice has become something of an icon from the movie franchise, so why has she never appeared in a Resident Evil video game? The original Resident Evil game began life as a remake of Capcom's early survival horror title Sweet Home. The game found players stranded in a mansion filled with monsters, and having to balance limited resources, solve puzzles and get to the bottom of where the creatures came from. The game was an unexpected smash and made survival horror popular amongst gamers.

Resident Evil 2 from 1998 would prove to be an even bigger hit and the franchise has been running ever since. The popularity of the series has gone up and down over the years, from the highs of Resident Evil 4 to the lows of Resident Evil 6, but it always finds fresh ways to reinvent itself. The horror has spread to other mediums too, including animated movies, comics, novels, and toys.

George A. Romero (Night Of The Living Dead) was once hired to write and direct an adaptation of the games but was later replaced by Paul W.S. Anderson. The Resident Evil movie franchise would go on to become the most successful film series based on a video game property, with the six movies grossing a combined $1.2 billion worldwide. In an unusual move, Anderson opted not to adapt any of the games for his movie, creating an original story with new characters.

This is because the Resident Evil movie was originally conceived as a prequel, explaining how the outbreak occurred. Anderson also felt a direct adaptation would spoil the tension since fans would know characters like Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield would survive. This led to the creation of Alice, played by Milla Jovovich (Hellboy). The movie opens with Alice waking up in an empty mansion with no memory but is soon led by a strike team to a hidden underground lab. The story of the movie was heavily inspired by Alice In Wonderland, including Alice's name, a villain named the Red Queen, and the lab itself is essentially Wonderland. While some fans were upset by the changes, it proved successful enough to launch a sequel. It was at this point it was decided to make the film franchise its own entity focusing on the adventures of Alice.

While the movies are somewhat controversial with fans, Alice herself has become an iconic female action hero. Despite her popularity, Alice has never actually appeared in a Resident Evil video game. That was partly due to the movie and game franchises being separate entities, but Jovovich has commented that while she would love to have Alice included in a game, its Capcom who aren't interested. The gaming giant is happy to license the series and reap the financial benefits of the movies, but they're also protective of the brand and want to keep the movie universe clear of the games.

This is apparently the reason major game characters who appeared in the movies, such as Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy, didn't return for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter since Capcom wouldn't allow them to be killed off. Alice not appearing in a Resident Evil game also makes sense logically, since the movies depict a bleak, post-apocalyptic future, whereas the video game's don't.

The Final Chapter was conceived as the end for Alice on the big screen, so it's unlikely she'll appear in another movie. It would be nice to see her reappear in some in a Resident Evil game and have her character come full circle, but for now, Capcom doesn't appear interested in making that a reality.
