Joanna Gaines Shares Her Family's Favorite Dessert Recipe That's So Easy To Make At Home
Joanna Gaines is stuck at home like the rest of the country as she and her family abide by the rules of social distancing. But instead of moping around or zoning out in front of the television, the Gaines family has been hard at work whipping up delicious foods in their farmhouse kitchen. Plus, they don’t even have a TV in the house.
Gaines has been sharing her most loved recipes via her Instagram feed as a practice run for her as-yet-unnamed cooking show Magnolia Network, which is scheduled to launch this fall. One of those is for her family’s favorite dessert that she also served on Valentine’s Day.
Joanna Gaines loves spending time in the kitchen
Fixer Upper fans know that she’s a whiz with interior design, but Gaines is equally talented with her culinary skills and what’s more, she’s eager to offer cooking tips to her millions of followers. So far, she’s posted video tutorials for Zucchini Bread, Chili, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Spinach Tortellini Soup.
All of the recipes come from Gaines’s new cookbook, Magnolia Table Volume 2. And most recently she revealed one of the most popular desserts in her household.
The most requested recipe at Joanna’s house is French Silk Pie
Recently, the 41-year-old mother of five revealed her family’s top pick for dessert. When sharing the video for French Silk Pie, Gaines captioned the post saying: “It’s the most requested dessert around our house and I don’t blame them: smooth chocolatey filling + crumbly chocolate cookie crust + homemade whipped cream… it is just so good!”
And the best part of all? Her pie is super easy to whip up with minimal prep time. On Valentine’s Day, Gaines hadn’t planned on making it at all but was able to add it on to the menu at the last minute. Her little loves were likely grateful for the sweet addition.
Make Joanna Gaines’s French Silk Pie at home
Joanna Gaines shared the recipe for her famous French Silk Pie on her Magnolia blog.
To make it at home you’ll need:
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup (⅔ stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
- ⅔ cup heavy cream
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 1 prebaked 9-inch pie crust or tart shell or homemade Chocolate Cookie Crust
- Whipped cream and shaved dark chocolate (optional), for garnish
Then just follow Gaines’s step by step instructions.
1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar and eggs until well blended. Cook over low heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture reaches 160 degrees F and coats the back of a metal spoon. Remove from the heat. Add the chocolate and vanilla and stir until smooth. Set aside to cool for approximately 5 minutes.
2. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. Add the cooled chocolate mixture and beat on high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
3. In another large bowl, beat the cream on medium-high speed until it begins to thicken, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the powdered sugar and beat on low speed, then gradually return to medium-high until stiff peaks form. Fold into the chocolate mixture.
4. Pour into the prebaked pie crust or tart shell. Refrigerate until well chilled, at least 4 hours or up to overnight.
5. Garnish with whipped cream and shaved chocolate, if desired.
6. Store, covered, in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.
