He has been a staple in the radio community and his influence on many is evident even today. Keep reading more.
Who was Polito Vega?
Polito Vega was a pioneer in the radio industry. He started his career at age 17 when he joined a local Puerto Rican station as an announcer. His first job in New York City was at WKDM in Spanish Harlem where he worked until 1967 when he moved to WADO-AM, the first 24-hour Spanish language station in the United States. It was here that Polito gained notoriety as a pioneer of Spanish language radio broadcasting. After working at various stations throughout New York City, he eventually made his way to WBGO-FM in 1986 where he hosted a popular salsa music show every Thursday night for over 20 years.
Polito had an incredible impact on the Latin music scene through his work on airwaves and with live events such as salsa concerts at Madison Square Garden alongside legendary promoter Ralph Mercado and Latin Quarters gigs held every Thursday night. He also held outdoor concerts called Las Maquinas which brought together people from all walks of life to enjoy performances by some of the best Latin musicians around. Through these events, Polito showed us that music brings us closer together regardless of race or class – something we can all appreciate today.
Polito’s influence extended beyond just music though; he was an advocate for social justice, promoting awareness about important issues like immigration reform and economic inequality among Latinos living in New York City and beyond. He used his platform to speak out against injustice wherever it occurred and encouraged others to do the same through their words and actions – a true testament to his passion for making this world better for everyone who inhabits it.
